Dwight Brydie Scholarship

The Dwight Brydie Scholarship has become an integral part of the Youth Conference, and this year, we will once again offer youth program participants the opportunity to win a $1000 scholarship to further their studies. Attached is the Scholarship Application. Please forward this to your youth providers and other organizations that are part of your youth practitioner community. Youth must be sponsored by a youth serving agency and be a participant in a youth program.

Dwight Brydie, a longstanding employee of the Employment Development Department, was a committed & passionate advocate for youth, prior to his untimely death in January 2006. Dwight understood the need to and value of reaching youth on the youth level. To honor his memory, CWA and the Youth Development Research Fund have established a scholarship program in his name. Depending on the number of contributions to the Fund, we will offer two or more scholarships of $1000 each in 2011.

We are only accepting applications from youth who are in a year-round program. Youth who were in Summer Youth programs only are not eligible, unless you have transitioned them into a year-round program. Also, we are only accepting applications for youth up to the age of 21.

Please help us get the word out about the Dwight Brydie Scholarship!  Even the application process provides a good learning experience for young people. The luncheon where we honor the scholarship winners has become a moving and inspiring tradition at the Youth Conference, and has a significant impact on the youth recipients. Winners are expected to attend the luncheon on Wednesday, January 19th as part of their experience as Scholarship recipients.

The deadline for receiving applications is Friday, December 10, 2010. Please let your youth participants, youth providers and other relevant parties know about this opportunity.

CWA WIA Reauthorization Recommendations

The Workforce Investment Act provides the foundation through its system of Workforce Investment Boards and One-Stop Career Centers to address the workforce needs of all companies, both large and small. After twelve years of implementing the 1998 law in regions throughout California, much has been learned about what works and also about what can be done statutorily to better focus the system envisioned by Congress. The following report details CWA's WIA reauthorization recommendations.
