MAKiN’ iT RIGHT: Youth Working to Change Themselves and Their Community
Juvie Gonzales, Consultant, Edward DeJesus Seminars

Juvie has over ten years of experience working with at-risk youth from the New York City and Los Angeles areas.

Note: This session is for youth participants!

Change starts with one person standing up and saying "enough." Change is an action and not a word, it is demonstrated not spoken. Change is what happens when six young adults from various walks of life decide to forego the norm. Rather than flipping burgers or checking groceries, these young people light a spark for change using the culture that they love. From hip-hop to skateboarding and all points in between, these young people go to work spreading a message about life, freedom and future economic opportunity. If they can do it, you can too.

Turning Your Youth Participants into Lean, Mean Opportunity Hunting Machines
Creating Opportunities through Networking

Edward DeJesus, Edward DeJesus Seminars and Consulting

Research states that 60-80% of job openings are never advertised in newspapers or on-line. It's clear - the good jobs and opportunities of the future will go to individuals who are well networked. Yet, 93% of youth program participants say they never follow-up with potential employers, summer work experience sites and/or mentors. An astonishing 90% feel they do not possess the skills to do so. Moreover, 87% of programs indicate that they DO NOT provide youth and/or staff with follow-up and networking tools, trainings and strategies!

This session will provide youth program staff the skills and tools they need to help their youth become Youth Opportuneurs, seeking out relationships and contacts that expand their social networks and increase their chances of connecting with experiences that lead to future economic and career opportunities.

CWA WIA Reauthorization Recommendations

The Workforce Investment Act provides the foundation through its system of Workforce Investment Boards and One-Stop Career Centers to address the workforce needs of all companies, both large and small. After twelve years of implementing the 1998 law in regions throughout California, much has been learned about what works and also about what can be done statutorily to better focus the system envisioned by Congress. The following report details CWA's WIA reauthorization recommendations.
